Garway Hill eco home bungalow retrofit
An initial feasibility sketch showing the re-cladding and retrofit of a bungalow on Garway Hill.
We were approached to carry out a feasibility study for the reconfiguration and retrofit of a Bungalow on Garway Hill, Herefordshire. The existing 1970’s bungalow did little to showcase the stunning views afforded by the site, and the low quality construction did not meet current building regulations. The client approached Co&Co Architects to provide some ideas for the retrofit and conversion of the dwelling, into a low energy, well insulated light home for their retirement.
Existing building
The most sustainable option is to avoid demolition and Retrofit First so we worked hard to come up with a with a new open plan layout that provided the clients brief, whilst working within the confines of the existing structure. The sustainable strategy includes enlarging existing window openings to allow better daylight and views out across the valley, and insulating the existing brick walls with External Wall Insulation to improve the thermal efficiency and airtightness of the house. The trussed rafter roof structure would be opened up internally to allow double height vaulted ceilings in the main living spaces.
